i'm doing some research into adventure racing for an english class (how neat is that?), and one of the questions that i haven't been able to satisfactorily answer is "why?" what brings you do adventure racing, and why do you do it? some of the races are bound to be uncomfortable, and yet, you do it. Why? what do you recieve from adventure racing that you couldn't get elsewhere?
all answers are welcome, from solely personal to speculation about drives common to most people who race. i look forward to any feedback or ideas.

Re: What draws you to adventure racing?
Thu, May 13, 2004 - 7:31 PMI have been the full time bartender at my job for over two years now. I hate to be whiny but people always say "Oh, the bartender, what's His special drink?" And I look around and say "Um, I don't see a Him anywhere". Or another is continually being called the cocktail waitress. Not that there is anything wrong with being a cocktail waitress. It's just the way people assume things. I deal with a lot of sexism.

Re: What draws you to adventure racing?
Wed, September 22, 2004 - 10:25 AMJeremy, for me it was the challenge. It's not something everyone does. It's also rougher and more outdoorsy than marathons, tri-athlons. I hate running and biking on pavement. I like to be outside in the wilder areas. You don't have elite athletes in Adventure Races; you have scrappers, those that see the inevitable scrapes and bruises as war wounds.
And when I did my first (and only right now, but not for long) race, I was a single mom, 33, overweight, and not an athlete. I wanted to do something that was a real "WOW." It was actually just a sprint, but still 3hours and 40 minutes of hell. When I finished, I was proud but didn't think I wanted to do it again. Just a few hours and a shower later, I was thinking about maybe doing another.

Re: What draws you to adventure racing?
Tue, October 12, 2004 - 12:16 PMFor me. Part of it is the adventure and not knowing what is going to happen and what is going to come next. A bigger part is that I'm LAZY. When you are in an adventure race, you CAN"T skip a workout. The team is counting on you. A team will be there with you at the race so you can't backout cause a cool party came up like you can in other races.

Re: What draws you to adventure racing?
Wed, October 13, 2004 - 10:46 AMHi Tess,
Bummer. I need to get to work and get a team. I'm motivated, but everyone that I've contacted to get together with has flaked. We have a great short AR series here in the Bay Area and I was hoping to get in on one, but can't find any takers. Oh well, I've been working on my trail running and have some trail marathons planned for the future. Too bad you're in TX.
